The History of Sarpy County, Nebraska
Like much of the surrounding area, Sarpy County was originally explored by Lewis and Clark as early as 1805. During the decades that followed, what would later become Sarpy County was predominantly settled by fur traders and farmers, also serving as the springboard for Nebraska’s settlement and expansion. Interestingly, while Sarpy County contained the oldest settlement in the state of Nebraska, it was one of the last lands along the river to be recognized by law. It was not until February 1, 1857, that the land “where the cities meet the country” was officially created and named after Colonel Peter Sarpy, an early fur trader at Fontenelle’s Post located in the Bellevue area in the 1840’s.

Facing criminal charges is stressful under any circumstances. If this is the first time you have ever been arrested, you may be dealing with the stress of being accused of a crime and attempting to learn the basics of the criminal justice system in short order. Hiring an experienced and skilled criminal defense attorney is the most important step you can take at this juncture to protect yourself. If you have never before needed the assistance of a criminal defense attorney, you likely do not know exactly what to expect from your attorney-client relationship. Although every attorney-client interaction is unique, one thing you can expect from your dealings with the team at Petersen Criminal Defense Law is guidance. From the moment you become a client, we will become your voice and your shield throughout the prosecution of your case. As such, it is crucial you not speak to anyone about your case before you consult with your criminal defense attorney. All too often, the prosecuting attorney will convince a defendant his/her case is hopeless and a conviction is a foregone conclusion when the truth is the State lacks sufficient evidence to secure that conviction. By the time the defendant realizes this, he/she has already entered into a guilty plea agreement with the State.
As an accused, you have a number of important rights guaranteed to you in the U.S. Constitution, including the right to remain silent, the right to a lawyer, and the right to confront and cross examine the witnesses against you. These rights can only help you, however, if you exercise them when appropriate. By exercising your right to an attorney immediately, you effectively ensure your other rights will be excercised when appropriate. The criminal defense team at Petersen Criminal Defense Law has a long history of protecting and defending the rights of people who have been accused of a crime. We would be honored to provide that same protection and defense to you.
