Mothers Against Drunk Driving, or MADD, Nebraska and National Presenting Sponsor Nationwide is partnering with Governor Heineman and First Lady Ganem this year for the 28th annual “Tie One On For Safety” Red Ribbon campaign in an effort to prevent drunk driving this holiday season in Nebraska. The focus of the campaign is to bring awareness to the dangers of drinking and driving and, specifically, to convince partygoers to use a designated driver if they plan to drink during the holiday season.
As part of the campaign MADD took a national survey that asked participants two important questions. The questions and responses are as follows:
“Reasons I was the designated driver”
- I want everyone to get home safely (75 percent)
- I don’t want to get arrested for DUI (45 percent)
- I don’t want to get in a crash (44 percent)
“Reasons I was driven by the designated driver”
- I want everyone to get home safely (85 percent)
- I don’t want to get arrested for DUI (72 percent)
- I don’t want to get in a crash (66 percent)
Of the respondents, approximately half of them indicated that they had been driven by a designated driver at some time during the last year and about 40 percent said they had been a designated driver at some time during the previous year. The responses to the survey appear to indicate that the message about drinking and driving is finally starting to get through to the driving public.
Across the United States, thousands of people are injured and killed every year in drunk driving accidents during the holiday season, defined for statistical purposes as the day before Thanksgiving through the day after New Year’s Day. In 2012 alone, 1,091 people were fatally injured in a drunk driving crash during the holiday season. Historically, New Year’s Day is the deadliest day to drive with 140 of those fatalities occurring that day in 2012.
